Earlier this fall, a court gave initial approval of a settlement in a class-action lawsuit stating that Apple and AT&T failed to meet customer expectations with advertised data plans for 3G-capable versions of the original iPad. At the device’s debut, Apple offered a $29.99/month unlimited data plan through AT&T, but in two months when the 3G iPad models went on sales AT&T disactivated the plan.
Yesterday, a number of claim forms was sent out to customers who bought or ordered an original Apple’s first-generation iPad with 3G cellular connectivity on or before June 7, 2010. It will allow them to receive benefits from a joint settlement proposed by Apple and AT&T. These claim forms are said to be filed by February 3, 2014.
By submitting the claim form, all U.S. customers who bought a 3G-capable iPad will receive a $40 payment from Apple. Those whose devices were affected, but a data plan was not activated, will also be eligible for $20 per month on AT&T’s current 5GB tier offering. Current pricing for that data plan is $50 per month. That means, that the fee will be reduces to $30 per month.
On the claim form, customers must confirm that the ability to switch in and out of the unlimited data plan was a reason why they purchased the 3G iPad. They are also required to give the serial number and IMEI number for the device. Those, who are using a new iPad also have the ability to apply the benefit to a newer device by giving the serial number and IMEI number of that newer iPad.
More details concerning the settlement and claim forms can be viewed on the settlement website.
